Some Jacksonville, Oregon History

I thought some history of the city of Jacksonville might be in order since I've posted several pictures of the area.
Rich Gulch became the central hub of the Southern Oregon area when gold was discovered there in 1851. Miners and people from all over came to the small town in droves hoping to strike it rich. Soon, it became a thriving community, becoming the centralized location of commerce for Southern Oregon, and the place of the county's government. According to the Southern Oregon Historical Society, when the railroad decided to choose a route that bypassed Jacksonville in favor of one that went to Medford, many of it's residents chose to move there, which made a serious problem for Jacksonville. As a result of that decision, the county seat was moved to Medford in 1927.

The Grand Sequoia

One is the middle of the Grand Sequoia, and the other is the trunk. I wanted to take a photo of the whole tree, but it wouldn't fit. These two give you an idea of the mammoth size of this tree!

Peter Britt Sign

This sign gives some information about Peter Britt. The sign sets at an angle so it's difficult to get a clear picture of the writing.

Entrance To The Britt Gardens

From this sign, one way leads you to the Britt gardens, and the other leads to a trail that is about 6 miles long that is enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts.
